Hybrids will make up ten per cent of Honda’s global sales by 2010, according to Honda’s President and CEO, Mr Takeo Fukui.

Mr Fukui made the announcement in his annual end of year address late last year.

Helping Honda to achieve its ambitious Hybrid target will be a new Sports Hybrid based on the CR-Z unveiled at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, and a new Global Hybrid to go on sale in 2009, with a focus on making hybrid technology more ‘affordable’ with a worldwide sales plan of 200,000 units.

Honda’s fourth-generation hybrid combines a petrol-powered engine with a high power electric motor to boost power and cut fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. A Nickel-Metal Hydride battery pack is used to capture and store electricity for the electric motor.

Generating power

The Hybrid engine draws on an ultra-thin electric motor for supplementary power when needed, such as during acceleration. And the amazing electric motor has the ability to generate and recharge its own batteries while cruising, decelerating and braking.

The basics

During acceleration, the engine or the engine working in tandem with the electric motor, propels the vehicle. During cruising, the petrol engine and/or the electric motor can propel the vehicle, depending on conditions. During braking, the petrol engine deactivates and the electric motor acts as a generator to replenish the battery pack.

Continuously variable transmission

Our Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), provides smooth and predicatable transitions and helps keep the IMA system operating at its peak efficiency. The CVT shifts seamlessly throughout the rev range by helping the engine stay in its most efficient operating range for both performance and economy.

  1. I think this technology will become inevitable on most new cars within ten years especially if performance does not suffer. With the developments in batteries and electric motors continuing to escalate it can only get better.
